Parkland Drive and Regency Park Drive bicycle lanes

Project overview

Halifax Regional Municipality is building comfortable and convenient cycling connections for all ages and abilities. Pending Council approval, this project would add bicycle lanes along Parkland and Regency Park drives and improve key intersections by making them safer and more accessible.

Direction for this project is part of the Making Connections: Active Transportation Priorities Plan (2014-2019), which identifies candidate bicycle routes in Halifax. Map 2C: Candidate Bicycle Routes and Greenway Network Halifax and Area, shows Parkland Drive and Regency Park Drive as desired bikeways.

This project would create safer active transportation connections for residents to reach destinations along the corridor, including Belcher's Marsh, Canada Games Centre, Keshen Goodman Library, and Halifax West High School.

Proposed scope of work

Unidirectional (or one-way) protected bicycle lanes are proposed for Parkland and Regency Park drives. The proposed lanes would be protected using pre-cast concrete curbs and flexible bollards. The project aims to add bicycle facilities within the existing street (curb-to curb) cross-section. This would minimize the need to relocate utilities or remove street trees. Some street parking would be lost to accommodate the proposed bicycle lanes. Curb-side access for drivers would be prioritized for loading, pick-up, and drop-off where demand is the highest.

Intersections in the project area will be reviewed to see how we can make them more accessible and safer for all users. We will also explore new locations for marked pedestrian crossings. The project will use best practices to integrate transit stops to make sure they remain accessible.
